Lactation Services

Prenatal Consultations: For patients who have general questions about lactation and breastfeeding, are experiencing minimal breast changes during pregnancy, have a history of breast surgery, have a history of endocrinopathies or infertility.

Breastfeeding Concerns: Evaluation and management of patients who are experiencing difficulty with latching, engorgement, mastitis, nipple wounds, and clogged ducts.

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (DMER): Patients who are experiencing sadness, nausea, anxiety, fear, dread, etc. during letdown with pumping or direct feeding.

Pain Management: Evaluation and management of nipple/breast pain during lactation.

Pumping Support: Guidance for pumping challenges, flange fitting, pump selection, returning to work or school consultations.

Low Milk Supply: Evaluation and management of low milk supply.
Perinatal Mental Health
Evaluation & Management: We provide evaluation, support, and medication management for perinatal mood disorders such as postpartum anxiety, depression, and mild to moderate postpartum OCD. ​

*We do not provide medication management for postpartum psychosis, severe postpartum OCD, severe PTSD, or patients with suspected or diagnosed mood disorders such as Bipolar I or II. We do not prescribe controlled substances including Zuranolone.*
Infant Feeding
Difficulty Latching: Evaluation and management of infant latching difficulties including prematurity, uncoordinated sucking, painful latching, poor milk transfer, leaking milk, reflux, coughing/choking/gagging with feeding, and low or slow weight gain.
Bottle Feeding: Evaluation and management of difficulties with bottle feeding including prematurity, uncoordinated sucking, milk leaking, nipple collapse, poor milk transfer, slow or low weight gain, colic, reflux, coughing/choking/gagging with feeding.
Poor Weight Gain: We provide weight checks, monitoring, and management/co-management of infants with poor weight gain due to feeding issues.
Infant Frenectomy
In Office Frenectomy Procedures: When necessary, due to feeding issues, we perform in office laser frenectomies with a CO2 soft tissue laser. This is a safe and simple procedure that improves feeding, nipple pain, infant comfort, and weight gain when combined with expert lactation/feeding care. ​​

Billing for Procedures: Frenectomies are billed to the patient's medical insurance. Out of pocket costs will be based on their insurance plan's deductible, cost shares, co-insurance, and co-pays. We are in network with all major commercial insurance plans, local plans, Kentucky Medicaid and Tenncare Wellpoint. ​​​
Who should I Refer?

Candidates for frenectomy are typically under 17 lbs and under 5 months of age.

If the baby is older or heavier than these parameters case by case consideration will be made by the provider performing the procedure after in office consultation and evaluation.

Any family that reports breastfeeding or bottle feeding difficulties should be referred for a full clinical evaluation due to the complex nature of infant feeding.
Support Groups & Classes
Milk Meet Up! Our weekly support group is open to all parents of little ones. This is a free community support group hosted by The Knapp Clinic staff. It is held every Tuesday from 12 - 1pm at the clinic. No registration needed.
